Oak-frame architect profile Calderpeel

Calderpeel’s design solutions evolve from positive working relationships and problem solving is the core of this dynamic. A varied skill base including specific expertise in utilising oak and timber framing allows the maximisation of any development’s potential.

Established in 1992, Calderpeel was founded by Harry Calder, who runs the architects’ practice with managing director Ewen Miller.

Calderpeel, based in Cheshire, is involved in a number of diverse local and national developments, along with a significant portfolio of work for private clients. In addition to a strong position in the marketplace, the practice is focused on constant business improvement and the importance of developing unparalleled working relationships. Calderpeel has a growing reputation in the design and delivery of exceptional, individual housing projects.

With a diverse and expanding portfolio the practice is involved in the design and delivery of both national and international projects. These include high-end luxury individual houses and leisure facilities, including golf course club houses in both the UK and Russia.

Calderpeel’s approach is clearly defined in its mission statement:-
“To be recognised as a leading design house, dedicated to achieving working relationships which result in excellent design solutions.”

Image 1

This image is an example of how oak-frame construction has been sympathetically employed to create this individual family home.

The house is located to the northern side of the site creating a light and spacious south-facing private garden, overlooked by the principal rooms. To the north a secure landscaped entrance courtyard was created, with views through the house affording the visitor tantalising glimpses into the pool area and garden beyond.

Sitting amongst mature trees the house has shallow pitched roofs with deep overhanging eaves, mellow brick and stone elevations which are complemented by the use of green oak framing to the large spaces. This traditional construction allows the large spans needed to create the open plan living areas and includes the large areas of glazing to give the house a light open feel.

This approach results in an elegant house of traditional materials and proportions which contains a series of flowing open plan contemporary spaces suited to modern living.

The property gained a Manchester Society of Architects Small Scale Residential Design Award Commendation 2009.
