Established in 1992 the practice has maintained a simple philosophy: each project provides a unique opportunity – whatever the size, whatever the contract value.

Traditional materials and detailing feature in many projects including post and beam systems in green oak, air-dried oak and Douglas fir. Many include full height glass direct glazed into the timber frame with no sub frame, giving a clean simple line.

Although mainly centred around Cumbria the practice has also undertaken a green oak-framed project in Buckinghamshire and other work in southern Scotland and throughout the north west.

The practice portfolio includes a wide range of work from nightclubs to hotel renovations, loft conversions to multi-unit housing developments, summer rooms to barn conversions. With a practical approach to sustainable design and conservation, many projects feature contemporary designs created from existing buildings combining high levels of insulation, traditional materials and new building technology. The common link is spatial awareness, robust detailing and visual impact.

Providing the full range of architectural services, including feasibility studies, 3D CAD modelling, planning/listed building applications, design access statements, historic building analysis, building regulations, tendering, cost control, on-site inspections, certification and plenty of lateral thinking, Ashton Design has the experience to help clients realise the full potential of their development.
