AKA works from its converted warehouse studio, fitted out by the practice, in Bristol’s design quarter, the Paintworks. This makes the practice ideally placed to work throughout the South of England.
AKA has specialisms in the following areas:
- the design and execution of green oak frame buildings
- creative conversion, conservation and extension of existing/listed buildings
- sustainable design in new, existing and historic buildings
- landscape design, the project buildings are carefully sited and integrated into their landscape/garden settings by AKA’s in-house landscape architect
AKA has designed many green oak projects including houses, stables, gazebos, garden rooms, garages, extensions, barn conversions and pavilions. The practice has a genuine passion for working with oak framing, the architects like the colour, texture and informality of the material along with the dramatic spatial quality that can be achieved. AKA has successfully transformed many existing buildings with oak-framed extensions by creating large daylight-filled rooms, connecting new and old spaces, opening up views and improving access to gardens.
The practice has an invaluable knowledge base and understanding of the problems and challenges posed by many building types including green oak buildings. This enables AKA to produce designs that are creative, cost-effective and practical.
The practice offers the benefit of over 20 years’ experience and
strives to provide a balanced and integrated approach to
sustainability in everything it does.
AKA is an open, friendly practice which believes that trust and
good communication between all parties is crucial to the success of
its projects. Clients will find AKA creative, flexible, organised
and solution orientated. AKA are good listeners and provide
leadership where required.
As a RIBA Chartered Practice AKA complies with strict criteria in an accreditation scheme, giving clients the assurance that the practice is committed to excellence in both design and service. AKA’s success is based on the close working relationships it builds with its clients, many of whom use the practice repeatedly.
