Since Batterham Matthews Design set up practice in 1994 the design ethos of the practice has been to work closely with its clients and look at the particular qualities of each brief and site.  This ensures that the designs we produce are not only function but are borne out of a deeper understanding of the context, and that we approach each design element as an opportunity, working from first principles rather than preconceived ideas.

Our passion for the use of natural materials, daylight and a deep understanding of the brief, is the basis from which we start to design and share in our clients’ vision for their particular project. Scoping of a project to meet the above aspirations, whilst respecting budgets and timescales, is an art form to which we have become experienced and enjoyed over the last 16 years.

Working with a green oak frame required a good understanding of its natural qualities, designing to allow shrinkage and twisting of the beams and post as they dry out is all part of the skill of the oak framer and architect.

Batterham Matthews Design has worked on new and enlightened contemporary designs along with more traditional approaches depending on the clients’ experience and aspirations.

The best way to find an architect that you can relate to is to have a good look at some of our previous work, and see if there is a general feel that appeals and then give the practice a ring and arrange a time to meet up.

Customers’ comments

“The design is hugely sympathetic to the original Georgian building but also contains inspirational modern features, not least the bat pad! The cedar performance area serves to create a harmonious warm and creative space, which can be bright and airy or suitably dark for performances.”Headteacher. Rowdeford School in Wiltshire.
