SERVICE
RIBA Chartered Architects practice Hawkes Edwards & Cave is working on projects throughout the Midlands and the UK. The practice has won awards for its repair and new-build projects both nationally and locally.

HERITAGE
Established for over 50 years, the practice has always specialised in conservation and repair work particularly on listed buildings and buildings in conservation areas. Many of these projects have been for the repair and refurbishment of timber-framed buildings, ranging from a Victorian well-head by William Burges, farmhouses, hall-houses and tiny thatched cottages and even a cruck-framed barn threatened with demolition.

These buildings have always been chopped about over the years and usually neglected and Hawkes Edwards & Cave has the understanding and experience to investigate which changes have caused problems, which are important and to work with the client to bring the best out of the building for the brief in mind today. The practice is used to negotiating with conservation officers and English Heritage and can advise on what a client should be considering when planning an alteration or conversion project.

NEW BUILDING
Alongside the conservation work Hawkes Edwards & Cave has always designed new buildings, usually for returning clients, and many of these have been either in the classical tradition or the local vernacular. Recent projects have included two projects with new barns with traditional oak-framed roofs and partitions, one for a large kitchen and family room to form the everyday heart of the house, another for an entertainment suite with a 50’ long party room and guest accommodation. The practice believes that traditional design and construction is often the happiest solution and will stand the test of time both for everyday use and as an investment for the future.

Sometimes opportunities arise where a more contemporary solution is required. Recent projects have given the practice the chance to try a contemporary approach to design, with the extensive use of oak in a less traditional setting.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DESIGN
Hawkes Edwards & Cave is a keen participant in sustainable building and a member of the Green Register. The practice has installed low-carbon technologies including solar panels, heat pumps and wood-chip boilers, and there is a preference to specify environmentally sustainable materials.

HAWKES EDWARDS & CAVE INTERIORS
The practice’s involvement in residential work has recently enabled it to offer a complete interior design service, providing a fully coordinated design package where required. This is included in all of the practice’s domestic projects to introduce the extra quality of ‘delight’ in the detailed design with bespoke joinery and fittings, including kitchens, bookcases and wardrobes. Hawkes Edwards & Cave believes it takes experience
and understanding to make homes that are more than just houses.
